Cardiac MRI

Home » Cardiac MRI
  • What it is: A detailed picture of your heart using magnets and radio waves (no radiation).
  • What it does: Helps your doctor see your heart muscle, valves, and blood vessels.
  • Why you might need it: Chest pain, heart failure, valve problems, or a heart condition you were born with.
  • What to expect:
    • Tell your doctor about any metal objects or allergies you have.
    • Lie on a table inside a machine for about 1 hour. You may hear loud noises and need to hold your breath sometimes.
    • May involve an IV line for contrast dye (not always).
  • After the test:
    • Resume normal activities and drink plenty of fluids.
    • Discuss results with your doctor at a follow-up visit.
  • Risks:
    • Safe for most people with no radiation.
    • Not suitable if you have certain metal implants.
    • Contrast dye may not be suitable for some people with kidney problems.
Safe way for your doctor to get a detailed picture of your heart!
